Indicator Purpose

Estimate coverage of improved drinking water sources in the target area.

Indicator Guidance

Definition of key concepts

  • Improved source: Per JMP list (piped, public tap, borehole, protected well/spring, rainwater; bottled water only if another improved source used for cooking).

  • Usual source: Source used most of the time for drinking in the last month.

Survey question

What is the main source of drinking water for members of your household?

All responses are categorised into:

  • Improved sources: Piped water into dwelling/yard/plot; Public tap/standpipe; Tube well or borehole; Protected dug well; Protected spring; Rainwater collection; Bottled water (if another improved source is used for cooking)

  • Unimproved sources: Unprotected well or spring; Tanker-truck or cart with small tank; Surface water (river, lake, dam); Bottled water (if unimproved source is used for other needs)
