G-WAT2* - % (percentage) of target households using at least basic sanitation services

Indicator Purpose

Track access to basic sanitation (improved, not shared) to inform sanitation programming.

Indicator Guidance

Definition of key concepts

  • Improved facility: Flush/pour flush to sewer/septic; VIP; pit with slab; composting toilet.

  • Basic: Improved facility not shared with other households.

  • Usual facility: Facility usually used by household members.

Survey question

What kind of toilet facility do members of your household usually use? (Flush to sewer or septic / Pit latrine / Composting toilet / No facility or open defecation)

Do you share this toilet facility with other households? (Yes / No)

Scoring

(Number of respondents using an improved sanitation facility that is not shared with other households / Total number of households surveyed) x 100

External validation

Combined question aligns with “basic” level in the WHO/UNICEF JMP WASH service ladder, although JMP and SDGs break this indicator into two.
